According to Valmiki Ramayana, when Lord Shri Ram came to know about the death of his father i.e. King Dasharath during his exile, he reached Gaya Dham in Bihar to perform his Pind Daan. During this time Lord Ram and Lakshman went to collect materials for the preparation of Pind Daan. During this time, the soul of King Dasharath came to Mother Sita and said that the time for Pind Daan is passing and if Pind Daan is not performed at the right time, then I will not get salvation. But at that time Lord Ram was not present there, due to which Mother Sita decided to perform Pind Daan herself.

During the Pind Daan of King Dasharath, Mother Sita made the Brahmin, cow, Banyan tree, crow and Falgu river present on the bank witness it. King Dasharath accepted the Pind Daan of Mother Sita and he went to Pitri Lok after being satisfied. During this, when Lord Ram and Lakshman returned, Sita ji told them everything. But Ram and Lakshman were very surprised to hear this. Then Sita ji called all those witnesses for testimony, out of which only Banyan tree said the truth. But all the other witnesses denied this and started saying that they have no knowledge about this subject. They went to Falgu river and Ketaki said that she does not know anything about this.

I got this curse

Mother Sita was very angry due to the lies of all the four witnesses and she cursed all of them. Out of which, she cursed the Falgu river that after some time there will be no water in it. Due to this reason, the Falgu river present in Gaya is still dry today. The cow got the curse that despite being worshipped, it will wander from door to door for food, which we see coming true today. Mother Sita cursed the Brahmin that no matter how much he gets, poverty will always remain in his house. Along with this, the crow got the curse that its stomach will not be filled by eating alone and it will die suddenly.

Banyan tree got blessings

Out of all these witnesses, only the Banyan tree had spoken the truth. Due to which Mother Sita was pleased with him and blessed him that he would get a long life. Along with this, a faithful wife will remember him and pray for the long life of her husband.
