Bengaluru: Living in Bengaluru is going to become more expensive from April 1. Now domestic waste collection and disposal charges will also be levied on the existing property tax bill from April 1. User fees for waste disposal have been approved by the Karnataka government. Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) proposed this fee in November last year, which has been approved by the Urban Development Department headed by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.
Who will have to pay how much fees?
This fee includes the cost of collecting garbage from people's homes every day and then disposing it. According to a report by Business Today, BSWML estimates that this user fee will earn up to Rs 600 crore annually.
There are six slabs of this fee structure based on the size of the property. A building of 600 square feet will have to pay Rs 10 per month, while a property of 4,000 square feet or more will have to pay a fee of up to Rs 400 per month. Suppose a three-storey building built on an area of 30x40 square feet will be charged a fee of Rs 150 per month.
They will have to pay extra
Similarly, there are many big apartments or commercial buildings where a lot of garbage is collected and removed every day. If they do not take the help of any waste processing agency, then in this case they will be charged Rs 12 extra per kg of garbage.
The government gave this clarification
Let us tell you that people are already charged for Solid Waste Management (SWM) as a part of property tax. The money collected from this is used for the maintenance of public places. The government claims that new fees need to be imposed to improve waste management in Bengaluru. This is a right step taken to solve the growing problem of garbage in the city.
