Leaders Extend Herath Greetings
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah conveyed his wishes, stating, “Wishing everyone a joyous and blessed Herath! May this sacred festival bring peace, prosperity, and divine blessings to every home.”
Similarly, former Chief Minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti shared her greetings: “Herath Mubarak to our Kashmiri Pandit brethren. May this occasion bring joy and happiness to all of you.”
The Significance of Herath
Herath, derived from the Sanskrit term "Hararatri" meaning "Night of Hara" (another name for Shiva), is the Kashmiri Pandit observance of Maha Shivaratri. Celebrated on the 13th day of the dark half of the month of Phalguna (February–March), it is distinct from the 14th-day celebration observed elsewhere in India.
The festival is marked by the ritual of "Vatuka Pooza," which involves the worship of Lord Shiva through symbolic representations. A central element of the celebration is the use of water-soaked walnuts placed in earthen pots, symbolizing the removal of ignorance and the revelation of inner truth.
Herath serves as a time for family gatherings, feasting, and the reinforcement of cultural bonds. Despite historical challenges, including displacement, the Kashmiri Pandit community continues to uphold the traditions of Herath, reflecting resilience and a deep connection to their cultural roots.
The festival not only signifies religious devotion but also embodies the unity and enduring spirit of the Kashmiri Pandit community, preserving their heritage and identity through the celebration of Herath.
