An Indian national enrolled as a postdoctoral fellow in the US has been arrested by federal immigration authorities. The student has been detained by the authorities on charges of supporting Hamas in protest against America.

 

Badar Khan Suri is a postdoctoral fellow at the Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University, Washington, DC. Suri, a researcher at Georgetown University, was arrested by federal agents outside his home in Virginia on Monday night.

  • Suri is married to an American citizen. According to his lawyer, he is awaiting a date in immigration court.

 

What did the Foreign Minister say about the Indian citizen?

According to the report, a total of 15,952 Indians have been deported by the US since 2009. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had recently said that the Indian government is investigating the nationality of 295 people who are in the custody of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

 

The US government has ordered the deportation of these people. The Foreign Minister told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply on March 13 that only those who are confirmed to be Indian citizens will be accepted for deportation.
