Senior space scientist and cryogenic engine expert V Narayanan will be the new chief of ISRO. Narayanan will replace the current ISRO chief S Somnath. Somnath will retire on January 14 after completing his two-year term.

Somnath took over as ISRO Chairman and Secretary, Department of Space on 14 January 2022. Narayanan is currently the Director of ISRO's LPSC located in Mahendragiri, Tamil Nadu.
According to the order issued late Tuesday evening, Narayanan's appointment to this post will be effective from January 14 for two years or until further orders. Narayanan specializes in rocket and spacecraft propulsion. He was the project director of the C25 cryogenic project of the GSLV MK-3 vehicle.

He joined ISRO in 1984 and served in various capacities before becoming the director of the centre. In 1989, he completed MTech in Cryogenic Engineering with first class from IIT-Kharagpur and joined the cryogenic propulsion field at the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC).
