How did it start?
The first Grammy Award was started in the year 1959 by the National Academy of Grammy Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS). The name Grammy is taken from Thomas Edison's gramophone. Its trophy was designed by John Billings and his team.
Initially Grammys were given in 28 categories but as the styles of music grew the number of awards has increased to 91. The first Grammy was won by Henry Mancini for Music from Peter Gunn.
Who got the first Grammy in India?
If we talk about Indians who have won Grammy Awards, the first name that comes to mind is Pandit Ravi Shankar. Pandit Ravi Shankar was a well-known sitar player and musician of India. He received this award in 4 different categories. He was also honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by Grammy in the year 2013.
Who made the trophy?
Now let us introduce you to the design of Grammy. Actually, the design of the Grammy trophy is like a gramophone which was made by John Billings with his own hands. He is also known as the Grammy Man. John's Colorado-based company Billings Artworks makes the Grammy trophy.
How is the nomination done
The nomination process for Grammy is very special. First, the members of the Recording Academy and invited experts choose their favourite works in different categories. Then these works are evaluated by the jury. Experts of each category make a chart by giving their opinion and then nominations are given on that basis. Only those artists are selected who have really created a different identity with their work.
Winners receive a trophy and international recognition. The Grammy Awards do not carry any cash prize.
