Cyclone Remal that originated in the Bay of Bengal will make landfall on Sunday midnight. High alert has been declared in Bengal regarding this. Kolkata airport has been closed. 12 teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in the coastal areas of the state. Navy and Indian Coast Guard are also on alert.

According to the information received from the Meteorological Department, the cyclone (Cyclone Remal) is currently 270 km south-east of the Bay of Bengal. It is forecast to pass through the coastal areas between Sagar Island in South 24 Parganas district of Bengal and Khepupara in Bangladesh at midnight on Sunday. Due to its effect, very heavy rains are expected in various districts of Bengal. Winds can blow at a speed of 110 to 120 kilometers per hour.

The sky of various districts of Bengal including Kolkata has been overcast since Sunday morning and strong winds have started blowing. It is also raining intermittently. A control room has been opened in the state secretariat Nabanna regarding the cyclone.

Relief materials, essential medicines and all other necessary things have been stocked. Relief camps have also been arranged in sufficient numbers for the affected people. Fishermen have already been instructed not to go to sea till 27 May and those fishermen who are there have been asked to return immediately.

The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rainfall in the coastal districts of Bengal and northern Odisha on Sunday and Monday. A red alert has been issued for the South and North 24 Parganas districts of Bengal. There is a possibility of major damage in these two districts.
