News Topical, Digital Desk : My country's dream of running a bullet train is soon going to be fulfilled. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav gave the countrymen some good news on the first day of the new year. Announcing the date, he stated that bullet trains will begin running in the country on August 15, 2027.
He jokingly said, “Buy your tickets now to ride the bullet train on Independence Day next year. In the first phase, the train will run on the 100-kilometer route between Surat and Vapi.”

55 percent work completed
Once the project is completed, the 508-kilometer journey between the two metro cities will take two hours and 17 minutes. Approximately 55 percent of the train project is complete. Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the project in Surat last November.
The entire route consists of 352 kilometers between Gujarat and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and 156 kilometers in Maharashtra. The project is being implemented by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) in collaboration with Japan.
320 kmph
This train will run on the lines of Japan's Shinkansen high-speed train. Its maximum speed will be 320 kilometers per hour. The entire project will include a total of 12 stations, including Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Vapi, Thane, and Mumbai. 85 percent of the project, or approximately 465 kilometers, will be elevated, of which 326 kilometers have been completed.
Japan first, China next:
Bullet trains operate in China, Japan, Spain, France, Germany, South Korea, Italy, and Taiwan. China has the longest network. Japan introduced the first bullet train in 1964. France and Germany are also leading high-speed rail companies. Bullet train projects are underway in the United States, Indonesia, and Morocco.
The first sleeper Vande Bharat train will run between Guwahati and Kolkata.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav announced that the trial run of the country's first sleeper Vande Bharat train has been completed. The train is expected to operate between Guwahati and Kolkata from January 18-19. During the trial run, the train, with 16 coaches, reached a maximum speed of 182 km/h. It will soon be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Vaishnav said the fare for a third-AC sleeper Vande Bharat between Guwahati and Howrah could be around ₹2,300. He added that airfares typically range from ₹6,000 to ₹8,000, sometimes reaching as high as ₹10,000.
The fare for a second AC coach could go up to 3,000 rupees, and for a first AC coach, it could go up to 3,600 rupees. He said that by the end of the year, 12 sleeper Vande Bharat trains will be ready to run in the country.
