News Topical, Digital Desk : Zohran Mamdani, who was sworn in as the mayor of New York City, has chosen City Hall, a historic subway station, for his inauguration ceremony. The station had been closed for 80 years, and Mamdani's choice of the station signified the beginning of a new era.

History of City Hall Station

City Hall Station is one of New York's original subway stations. Known for its magnificent vaulted ceilings, chandeliers, stained glass skylights, and arched tunnels, the station's first train departed from City Hall on October 27, 1904. It was the first station on New York's first subway line.

Why was City Hall station closed?

Over time, passenger numbers increased and trains grew longer. The subway station's platform was curved, making it unsuitable for the new trains. Consequently, the station was closed in 1945.

Mamdani's election promises

Mamdani made promises like free public transportation during his election campaign. These promises are believed to have played a significant role in his victory. Therefore, by choosing this subway as the launch of his term, Mamdani seems to be signaling the beginning of a new era.

Mamdani's message

Mamdani has said that this station symbolizes the purpose of his incoming government. He says that when the station opened in 1904, it symbolized a New York that was both beautiful and known for its large-scale, philanthropic work that transformed the lives of working people. He believes he wants to carry forward that vision.

swearing-in ceremony

Mamdani was sworn in privately as Mayor of New York City. He was administered the oath of office and secrecy by New York Attorney General Letitia James. He will also be sworn in at a public, formal ceremony at City Hall this afternoon, attended by other elected leaders. Senator Bernie Sanders will administer the oath.
