Colombo: Marxist leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake is going to become the next President of Sri Lanka. He has got a huge lead in the elections. On the other hand, the current President Ranil Wickremesinghe had to face a crushing defeat. Ranil is in third place with 16 percent votes.
The people of Sri Lanka, who are facing economic crisis, are looking at Anura as a 'messiah'. Anura has promised to make policies keeping the poor in mind and give tax relief. A total of 75 percent of the voters exercised their franchise in the elections.
Who is Anura Dissanayake?
Anura Dissanayake was born on 24 November 1968 in Thambuthegama village of Anuradhapura district of Sri Lanka. Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna is Anura's political party. Anura joined the party even during his student days. In 1987, Anura took full-time membership of the party. Anura's father was a labourer. He became a member of Parliament for the first time in the year 2000.

Anura Dissanayake is a Marxist and Leninist leader. Anura is known as AKD in Sri Lanka. Anura succeeded in winning the hearts of the people with his vocal and passionate speeches against corruption. Anura's popularity increased the fastest during the economic crisis in 2022.

Being of Marxist ideology, it is believed that Anura's inclination towards China is natural. The Week also claimed in one of its reports that Anura's party is close to China. It is suspected that the party has also received funding from China. But Professor Anil Jayanta, a senior leader of his alliance NPP, had clarified that our alliance believes in working with India because India is a superpower.
