News Topical, Digital Desk : AIDS is a serious disease caused by HIV. This virus attacks a person's immune system, causing the body to lose its ability to fight minor infections and diseases. Therefore, with AIDS, even a minor infection can be fatal.

Therefore, it is important to raise awareness about this dangerous disease. To this end, World AIDS Day is celebrated every year on December 1st. Let's learn how AIDS can spread and what precautions are necessary to prevent it.

How is AIDS spread?

HIV can be spread through an infected person's body fluids, such as blood, semen, vaginal discharge, and breast milk. It is mainly transmitted through:

  • Unprotected sex – Having sex without a condom with an HIV-infected person can increase the risk of spreading the virus.
  • Using infected syringes – HIV can be spread through the use of needles, syringes, or other injection equipment contaminated with infected blood. This is mainly seen in people who inject drugs.
  • Blood transfusions – Transfusions of HIV-infected blood can also transmit the virus. However, modern blood testing systems have reduced this risk.
  • Mother-to-child: HIV can be passed from an infected mother to her baby during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. This risk can be significantly reduced with proper care and medication.

Ways to prevent AIDS

  • Protected sex: Use condoms correctly every time you have sex. Condoms protect against many sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.
  • Use new injections: Always use new, unopened needles and syringes for injections. Never share injection equipment.
  • Blood tests - Before receiving a blood transfusion, ensure the blood has been tested for HIV. Blood tests are now mandatory before donating blood in India.
  • Precautions during pregnancy: Pregnant women infected with HIV should seek medical advice. Medications and proper care can reduce the risk of mother-to-child transmission of the infection.
  • Regular testing: If you are at any risk of HIV infection, get tested regularly. Early detection and treatment can help control the disease.
  • Raise awareness - Educate people about the spread and prevention of AIDS. Help dispel myths.
