News Topical, Digital Desk : Delhi News: Delhi Police's objection to the bail of former Congress councilor Ishrat Jahan has once again intensified the political and legal stir in the entire case. The Delhi High Court on Friday took major action in this case and summoned the entire record in digital format from the subordinate court.
The bench of Justice Naveen Chawla and Justice Shalinder Kaur made it clear that now this matter is not just a bail matter, but has become a legal investigation into the depth of the riots and the conspiracy. The next hearing of this case has been fixed on July 18.
What was the matter?
In February 2020, violence broke out in North-East Delhi during protests against CAA and NRC. 53 people were killed and hundreds were injured in these riots. Delhi Police claims that this was not a sudden incident but a pre-planned conspiracy in which many faces including Ishrat Jahan were involved.
Bail became the center of controversy
Ishrat Jahan was granted bail by the trial court on March 14, 2022. The court had found that she was neither the mastermind of any conspiracy, nor a member of any violent WhatsApp group, nor was she present at the spot during the riots. The court also acknowledged that the protest site Khureji, where she was active, was far from the center of the riots. But Delhi Police says that the lower court ignored the gravity of the crime and its impact. They claim that the chakka-jam and the alleged conspiracy were a kind of terrorist act, which not only destroyed public life but also challenged national security.
Big conspiracy or protection of law?
Ishrat Jahan is not alone in this case. Names like JNU's Umar Khalid, Natasha Narwal, Devangana Kalita, Safoora Zargar, former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain and Khalid Saifi are also included in the accused list. Action is being taken against all of them under stringent laws like Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act i.e. UAPA.
Will the bail game change?
Now the question is whether the Delhi Police's appeal in the High Court will overturn Ishrat Jahan's bail? Or will the lower court's decision remain intact? This will be clear only on July 18, but one thing is certain that the legal saga of the Delhi riots is not over yet.
