A Hindu Pakistani minister of state was attacked by protesters in Sindh. Khail Das Kohistani, minister of state for religious affairs in the government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, was passing through Sindh's Thatta district on Saturday when tomatoes and potatoes were hurled at his convoy. Kohistani was unharmed in the attack, officials said.

Why was Kohistani attacked?

The protesters were opposing the federal government's controversial irrigation canal projects, which they argued would reduce the flow of rivers vital for irrigation in the southern province.

Prime Minister Shahbaz strongly condemned the attack on Kohistani and assured him of a thorough investigation of the incident. He said, "Attack on public representatives is unacceptable. Those involved in the incident will be given severe punishment."

Federal Information Minister took cognizance of the matter

Kohistani is a member of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the protesters also raised slogans against the party's federal government. Federal Information Minister Atta Tarar also took notice of the incident. He also sought details of the incident from Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ghulam Nabi Memon and a report from the federal interior secretary.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah also strongly condemned the act. In his statement, he said that no one has the right to take the law into their own hands. He directed the Deputy Inspector General of Police of Hyderabad region to immediately arrest the miscreants involved in the attack and submit a report.

Let us tell you that Kohistani belongs to Jamshoro district of Sindh. In the year 2018, he was elected a member of Parliament for the first time from PML-N. After completing his five-year term, he was re-elected in 2024. After this he was made a Minister of State.
