News Topical, Digital Desk : United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday (local time) addressed an emergency special session of the Security Council at the UN Headquarters in an impassioned appeal for peace. Guterres urged urgent action to de-escalate the crisis in Iran following the recent US military attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities.

Calls for urgent efforts to stop the fighting

"We cannot give up on the pursuit of peace. We must not," Guterres said, calling for urgent efforts to prevent the danger of retaliation and deeper conflict in the region.

The deteriorating situation is taking a dangerous turn

Addressing a session on 'Threats to International Peace and Security', Guterres warned that the US attack on Iran is a dangerous turning point in the deteriorating situation in the region. He said, 'Two days ago in this very House, I made a direct appeal. Give peace a chance. That appeal was not heeded. Instead, the bombing of Iranian nuclear installations by the US is a sign of a dangerous turning point in a region that is already faltering.'

Guterres calls for a return to diplomacy

UN chief Guterres called for a return to diplomacy and advocated a credible, comprehensive and verifiable solution to Iran's nuclear program. This includes full access for International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors.
