News Topical, Digital Desk : The issue of toll collection on the Bhopal-Betul National Highway ( NH-46) has now reached the Rajya Sabha, where during the winter session, former Chief Minister and Rajya Sabha MP Digvijay Singh directly addressed Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari and strongly objected to the issue.
Digvijay Singh informed the House that the highway between Bhopal and Betul is still incomplete in many places. The road is in poor condition, and construction work is ongoing at many locations, yet travelers are still being charged the full toll. He said that charging tolls for incomplete work is a gross injustice to the public.
What problems are you facing ?
This issue is particularly concerning at the Kundi toll plaza near Shahpur. The Betul to Itarsi highway faces significant difficulties for drivers due to potholes, incomplete asphalting, and ongoing construction along several stretches. Travelers and locals have repeatedly complained about the lack of signage, lighting, and service roads.
Gadkari's rebuke has no effect
The Rajya Sabha MP raised an important point, saying that Nitin Gadkari himself had previously reprimanded the officials and contractors concerned for the poor condition of this highway. He said, "Minister, you yourself reprimanded the officers, but despite your instructions, nothing has changed on the ground. Extortion continues today, and the work remains pending."
Digvijay Singh demanded to stop toll collection
The Betul-Bhopal road is a vital lifeline for Madhya Pradesh. Digvijay Singh argued that charging tolls until the road is completely safe and accessible is morally and legally wrong. He demanded that toll collection be immediately halted until construction is 100% complete.
