UAE to join Trump's 'Board of Peace', Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed accepts invitation

News Topical, Digital Desk : United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has accepted US President Donald Trump's invitation to join the "Board of Peace," which  will oversee post-war reconstruction and stability in Gaza.

The UAE Foreign Ministry officially confirmed this on Tuesday. The move is a key part of Trump's 20-point peace plan, which aims to permanently end the Gaza  conflict .

This board, chaired by Trump, will initially focus on Gaza, but its scope could expand beyond that. Several countries have been invited to join, with the UAE becoming the first major Arab country to join.

What will be the significance of joining the board?

UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed said the decision reflects the importance of fully implementing Trump's 20-point Gaza Peace Plan. He stressed that this plan is essential for achieving the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people. The UAE pledged its active contribution to the Board's mission to promote cooperation, stability, and prosperity.

The UAE maintains strong ties with the Trump administration. In 2020, during Trump's first term, Abu Dhabi signed the Abraham Accords, formalizing relations with Israel. This move further strengthens that friendship.

What are the terms of membership?

The board is highly controversial. Countries are asked to contribute more than $1 billion to join. According to the charter, regular membership is for three years, but if a country contributes more than $1 billion in cash in the first year, it can gain a permanent seat. Trump will be the board's chairman, and a country's membership depends on his approval.

Some believe this board could challenge the United Nations. Its charter appears to be limited to Gaza, but could also impact global conflicts. Many Western countries have expressed caution about it.

What will be the benefit of the Board of Peace?

Trump's 20-point plan was launched last October. Phase 1 focused on a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of Israeli hostages, and assistance to local people. Phase 2 now includes reconstruction, demilitarization, and transitional governance in Gaza. The Board of Peace is a key part of this phase.

The plan calls for establishing a Palestinian technical administration in Gaza, under international supervision. Trump claims this plan will bring lasting peace to the region.
