News Topical, Digital Desk : An NIA court has convicted two Coimbatore residents for propagating the ideology of terror group ISIS. The Kochi-based special court for hearing NIA cases convicted Mohammed Azharuddin, a resident of Ambu Nagar in Ukkadam, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, and Sheikh Hidayatullah alias Firoz Khan, a resident of South Ukkadam.

During the sentencing hearing, both accused pleaded with the court for leniency, citing their family background. The court examined 40 witnesses during the trial. Azharuddin is also accused in another case related to the Coimbatore bombings.

Although six people were named as accused in the FIR, the NIA filed a charge sheet against only two accused in 2019.

The case was registered in 2019 after the NIA received information that Azharuddin and his associates were propagating the ideology of the terrorist organisation ISIS with the aim of recruiting youth to carry out terrorist attacks in South India, particularly in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
