US President Donald Trump's government has implemented a new rule, according to which all immigrants living in America, whether they are on a legal visa, such as H1B visa or student visa, will have to keep legal documents with them for 24 hours. This rule implemented by the Trump administration has come into effect from April 11. This rule has been implemented under Trump's order 'Protecting The American People Against Invasion'. The purpose of this rule is to take strict action against illegal immigrants living in America. The US court has given approval to implement this rule.

What is the new rule?

  • This is one of the swift and strict decisions taken by US President Donald Trump to stop illegal immigration into the US.
  • The aim of the Trump administration is to expel millions of people living illegally from America.
  • This rule mainly affects immigrants who are living in the US illegally or without valid documents.
  • Now all non-citizens living in the US, who are above 14 years of age and stay in the US for 30 days or more, are required to mandatorily register with the government by filling Form G-325R.
  • If a child is below 14 years of age, his/her parents will have to get him/her registered.
  • Those entering the US after April 11 will also need to register within 30 days of arrival.
  • Those who do not follow this rule may be punished with fine, jail or both.

What else is there in this rule?

Apart from this, if a person changes his address, he will have to inform the government about the new address within 10 days. Failure to do so can result in a fine of up to 5 thousand US dollars. Not only this, immigrants whose children are turning 14 years old will have to register with the government again and also submit their fingerprints.

What are the rules for H1B visa and green card holders?

  • Those who have a valid visa, such as H1B work visa, student visa (F1) or green card, do not need to fill out Form G-325R again.
  • This means, Indian citizens who are working or studying in the US on H1B visa will not have to register again.
  • Such people will have to keep their valid documents, like visa, passport, I-94, green card etc. with them 24 hours a day.

What statement did the US government give?

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement that all non-citizens 18 years of age or older must carry this registration document with them at all times. She said the administration has instructed DHS to strictly enforce this rule.
