News Topical, Digital Desk : Every morning, we wake up, brush our teeth, shower, and go about our daily routine. We usually assume we're completely safe inside our homes, especially in places like the bathroom. But sometimes, life throws up surprises that are hard to believe. Something similar happened to 40-year-old Rahul Kumar Jangde, who lives in Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh. One morning, a seemingly simple task—brushing his teeth—was met with a sudden pain that shook both his life and the medical understanding of doctors. So let's explore what kind of accident could happen while brushing your teeth, a phenomenon known to have only 10 such cases worldwide.

What kind of accident can happen while brushing your teeth?

Rahul says that one December morning, he was brushing his teeth in the bathroom as usual when he suddenly felt a hiccup. Seconds later, he felt something rapidly swelling inside the right side of his throat. His neck began to swell instantly. The pain was so intense that his vision began to darken. He managed to tell his wife, "Something doesn't feel right, we should go to the hospital." After that, Rahul remembers nothing. When he regained consciousness, he was in the emergency ward of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Hospital in Raipur. There are

only 10 such cases worldwide.

After examining Rahul at the hospital, even the doctors were astonished. Rahul had neither suffered any injuries, nor had he been in an accident, nor did he suffer from cancer or any other serious illness. Despite this, a vital vein in his neck had ruptured spontaneously. This vein is the carotid artery, which carries oxygenated blood directly from the heart to the brain. Even the slightest damage to this vein can lead to death within minutes. Doctors diagnosed it as a spontaneous carotid artery rupture, meaning a rupture of a vein in the neck without any apparent reason.

Dr. Krishnakant Sahu, head of the Department of Heart, Chest, and Vascular Surgery, explains that carotid arteries typically rupture in accidents, gunshot wounds, knife wounds, or throat cancer. However, spontaneous rupture without any apparent cause is extremely dangerous. He added that, according to medical journals, only 10 such cases have been reported worldwide. This was the first case of its kind in Chhattisgarh.

The throat was filled with blood

Rahul's right carotid artery ruptured, causing blood to rapidly fill his throat. Blood pooled around the vein, forming a balloon-like structure, known as a pseudoaneurysm in medical parlance. This condition is extremely dangerous. If the blood clot had reached his brain, Rahul could have been paralyzed or even killed. According to doctors, there was a constant risk of the vein rupturing again before and during the surgery.

If this had happened, Rahul could have died from excessive bleeding within minutes. After the surgery, Rahul was kept on a ventilator for 12 hours. After regaining consciousness, doctors examined his voice, movement of his limbs, and facial muscles to ensure there was no brain damage.
