News Topical, Digital Desk : The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Centre and others seeking their response on a petition related to disaster preparedness. The plea sought directions to assess and address critical infrastructure and personnel gaps in fire services, road emergency response and disaster preparedness.

A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta was hearing a petition filed by a man who lost his daughter in a fire incident in Surat in 2019. The top court issued notices to the Centre and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), among others, asking them to file their responses to the petition within four weeks.

What did the petitioner claim?

The petitioner, who appeared in person, claimed that the National Building Code, 2016 was not being strictly followed and incidents of fire were occurring across the country.

The petition also sought the formation of a high-level judicial commission to monitor the implementation of NDMA and fire services rules and recommend punitive action against erring officials.
