News Topical, Digital Desk : Parashurama is the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu and is also considered one of the eight immortals. Parashurama is mentioned in both the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Today, we'll tell you about Mahendragiri Mountain, believed to be the abode of Parashurama. Let's learn more about this special place.

Where is Mahendragiri mountain located?

Mahendragiri Mountain is a historical site, a prominent peak in the Eastern Ghats in the Gajapati district of the state of Odisha. Standing at an elevation of approximately 1,501 metres (4,925 ft) above sea level, it is the second highest peak in Odisha.

Description is found in Kalki Purana

The scriptures state that Parashurama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu , is among the "Ashtacharijivi" (eight immortals) who will live until the end of Kaliyuga. The Srimad Bhagavata and Kalki Purana mention that he is still performing penance on Mount Mahendragiri. It is also believed that he is present there in subtle form and will appear when the time comes.

Why did you decide to live on this mountain?

Lord Parashurama vowed to avenge his father's murder and alleviate his mother's grief by freeing the earth from unjust kings. He purified the earth 21 times. After the destruction of the Kshatriyas, he performed the Ashwamedha Yajna. After the final purifying of the Kshatriyas, he donated the entire earth to his guru, the sage Kashyapa.

Sage Kashyapa ordered Parashurama to leave the earth. Obeying his guru's command, Lord Parashurama decided not to remain on earth. Parashurama then headed for the southern ocean, where the ocean provided him with a place to live on Mount Mahendrachal (Mahendragiri). It is believed that Parashurama still resides there today.

From whom did one get the boon of being immortal?

Lord Parashurama is a great devotee of Lord Shiva. Pleased with his penance, Lord Shiva granted him the boon of immortality. Thus, he is one of the eight immortals, described in this verse:

Ashwatthama Balirvyaso Hanumansch Vibhishana:.
Kripa: Parshuramashcha Saptaitai Chirjivin:॥
Saptaitaan sansmarennityam markandeyamthashtamam.
Jivevedvarshashant Sopi is prohibited from all diseases.

This verse describes the 8 Chinanjeevis, which include Ashwatthama, Bali, Vyasa, Hanuman, Vibhishana, Kripa and Parashurama as well as the sage Markandeya.
