According to the Vedic calendar, Phalgun Amavasya is being celebrated today, February 17th. The first solar eclipse of 2026 will occur on this day. Worship and eating are prohibited during the solar eclipse. In this article, let us explain what should not be done during the solar eclipse, whether it will be visible in India, and the duration of its Sutak period.

Will the solar eclipse be visible in India or not?

This year,  a solar eclipse will loom over Phalguna Amavasya (the new moon day of Surya Grahan). Shraddha (shraadh) and tarpan (offerings) are performed for ancestors on this new moon day. This brings peace to the souls of ancestors and ensures their blessings remain with family members. A solar eclipse will occur on Phalguna Amavasya (today's eclipse timing), but this eclipse will not be visible in India, and the sutak (sunday period) will not be valid.

Solar Eclipse 2026 Date and Time

A solar eclipse is set to occur today, February 17th. The eclipse will begin at 3:26 PM (Grahan Time in India, February 17, 2026). It will end at 7:57 PM (Surya Grahan Kab Lagega). This eclipse will not be visible in India. Therefore, the Sutak period (Surya Grahan 2026 Sutak Time) will not be valid.

What not to do and what not to do during a solar eclipse? 

  • According to Sanatan scriptures, food should not be consumed during a solar eclipse . A solar eclipse has a negative impact on food. Therefore, it is recommended to add basil leaves to food before the solar eclipse.
  • Apart from this, pregnant women should not go out of the house during the eclipse.
  • Also, scissors, knife and needle should not be used by mistake.
  • Worship and auspicious work should not be done during solar eclipse.
  • After the solar eclipse ends, take a bath. Then, clean your home and temple.
  • Perform puja and worship, and donate special things.
  • One should avoid touching idols even in the temple.
  • Chant mantras in your mind.
  • Sutak starts 12 hours before the solar eclipse.
