What to eat during Rama Ekadashi fast?

  • Fruits and Nuts – All types of fruits and dry fruits can be consumed during this fast.
  • You can also eat these – Potato, sweet potato, taro, and sago can be eaten on this day.
  • Buckwheat and water chestnut flour – On this date, you can eat puri, paratha or pakoda made from water chestnut flour, buckwheat flour and Rajgira flour.
  • Dairy products – Milk, curd, buttermilk, cheese and ghee can be consumed on this occasion.
  • Salt and Spices – On this day, only rock salt and satvik spices like black pepper, green chillies, ginger, cumin powder etc. can be used.

What should not be eaten during Rama Ekadashi fast?

  • Grains – Consumption of rice, wheat, barley, millet, corn and all types of pulses is prohibited on this day.
  • Tamasic food – Garlic, onion, meat, fish, and alcohol should not be consumed on this day.
  • Common salt – Common salt should not be used during fasting.
  • Some vegetables – According to some beliefs, vegetables like cabbage, carrot, spinach, brinjal and turnip should also not be eaten on Ekadashi.

  • During the fast, observe celibacy and remain pure in thought, speech and action.
  • Do not bring bad thoughts towards anyone in your mind.
  • Tulsi leaves should not be plucked on Ekadashi, because Tulsi ji also fasts on this day.
  • If possible, stay awake at night and chant the name of Lord Vishnu and sing hymns.
  • At the end of the puja, definitely ask for forgiveness from Lord Vishnu for any mistake committed during the fast.
