On Sunday morning around 4:30 am, when devotees had gathered in large numbers in front of the Sri Gundicha temple to have darshan of the Lord, there was a lot of jostling. After this, a stampede broke out there. 3 people died and about 50 others were injured in the stampede near the Sri Gundicha temple in Puri on Sunday.

Giving more information about the incident, a senior official said that the incident took place around 4 am when hundreds of devotees had gathered near the temple. Puri District Collector Siddharth S Swain said that the injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital. The condition of 6 people is critical.

District Collector Siddhartha said the deceased have been identified as Basanti Sahu of Bolagarh and Premkant Mohanty and Pravati Das of Balipatna. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem and the case is under investigation.

This incident happened near Shardhabali, in front of Sri Gundicha temple. At that time a huge crowd had gathered to have darshan of Lord Jagannath seated on the chariot. During the darshan, it became difficult to control the crowd and people started pushing and shoving. Some people fell on the ground and a stampede occurred.

The injured were taken to the hospital

The injured people were immediately taken to the district hospital by 108 ambulance. The team of doctors is continuously treating them. The condition of some of the injured is said to be critical.
