When family members offer them food and perform religious rituals for them, they are satisfied and bless the family with happiness and prosperity. Pitru Paksha is celebrated from the full moon of Bhadrapad month to the new moon of Ashwin month.
This year Shradh Paksha (Shradh Paksha dates 2025) is starting from 7 September 2025. It will end on 21 September 2025. Shradh rituals are performed on the date on which the ancestors died. If the date of death of any ancestor is not known, then Pinddaan or Shradh should be performed for them on the day of Sarvapitri Amavasya.
Give food to crows
During this time, there is a ritual of feeding crows. You must be wondering why crows were chosen among so many creatures to be fed during Shraddha. The answer to this is found in Garuda Purana. It says that crows have the power to travel between the three worlds, i.e. Earth, netherworld and heaven.
Apart from this, he is the representative of the ancestors and Yamaloka. He is also the messenger of Yamaraja. It is believed that ancestors come to earth through crows. Therefore, it is customary to feed crows.
It is believed that by doing this the food reaches the ancestors directly. It is said that if a crow eats the food, it is considered an auspicious sign. This shows that the ancestors have accepted the food you have given.
