New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday heard the case of rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata. The apex court had taken suo motu cognizance of the case. Now the Supreme Court has refused to stop the live streaming of the hearing. The Supreme Court says that this is a matter of public interest and people should know what is happening in the court?
A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra perused the CBI report and said disclosure of the position would jeopardise further investigation.
This is why Sibal demanded to stop live streaming
During the hearing in the Supreme Court, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the West Bengal government, demanded to stop the live streaming of the ongoing proceedings in the case. He alleged that women lawyers in the chamber were receiving threats of acid attack and rape. The apex court assured Sibal that it would take action if there was any threat to lawyers and others.
The doctor's body was found in the seminar hall
On August 9, the body of a female doctor was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Investigation confirmed that she was raped and then murdered. The next day, Kolkata Police arrested a civic volunteer in connection with the case. On August 13, the Calcutta High Court handed over the investigation of the case from Kolkata Police to the CBI. The CBI has been investigating the case since August 14.
