News Topical, Digital Desk : Pregnancy is as beautiful as it is delicate for every woman. During this time, even a slight fever or body ache brings to mind the first fear that comes to mind - "Is this medicine safe for my unborn child?" For some time now, there has been growing concern that the most common fever medicine, 'Paracetamol', might be hampering the child's mental development. But now, science has proved this fear to be completely baseless. A new and huge study has revealed that this medicine is safe for both mother and child.

New research published in 'The Lancet'

An important study was recently published in the prestigious medical journal "The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Women's Health." This study debunks long-held concerns that paracetamol use impacts a child's mental development. Researchers have clarified that taking this medication during pregnancy does not increase the child's risk of autism, ADHD, or intellectual disability.

The conclusion was reached after reviewing 43 studies.

To reach this conclusion, scientists from the University of Liverpool in the UK and other institutions in Europe conducted a comprehensive investigation. They reviewed a total of 43 different studies, specifically focusing on the precise methods used to compare siblings.

The researchers found that there were no significant differences in neurological development between children exposed to paracetamol during pregnancy and those who were not. This study confirms that the drug is safe when used as directed.

The difference between old fears and reality

In September 2025, the US government issued health guidance that suspected a link between paracetamol and autism. However, the new study has made it clear that the previous studies were flawed.

According to the researchers, the risks previously reported may not have been due to the drug itself (paracetamol) , but rather to factors such as the mother's illness, fever, pain, or genetics. Previous studies failed to accurately distinguish between these factors and the drug's effect.

Treatment of fever and pain is necessary

Experts at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine support this study, saying that leaving fever and infections untreated during pregnancy can be more dangerous for both the mother and the fetus.

Rudrarup Bhattacharya, a researcher at the University of Adelaide in Australia, also called this a significant finding. He said that paracetamol remains an important and safe option for preventing fever and pain. Therefore, it can be taken without fear whenever medically necessary.

Do not ignore fever

  • Taking paracetamol during pregnancy does not increase the risk of autism or neurological disorders in the baby.
  • This conclusion has been drawn after reviewing 43 research studies.
  • Older studies ignored 'mother's illness', leading to misconceptions.
  • Leaving fever or pain untreated can be more risky during pregnancy.
