News Topical, Digital Desk : The Nepali Congress party formally split on Wednesday after talks between two factions led by General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Biswa Prakash Sharma and party president Sher Bahadur Deuba failed to reach an agreement.

Thapa, 49, was unanimously elected president of the Nepali Congress party at a special general convention. The country's oldest and largest party finally split after Thapa and Sharma rejected a last-minute demand from Deuba to resign as party president.

Both the general secretaries urged Deuba to step down from the top post and not contest the upcoming parliamentary elections to play the role of a mentor while respecting the sentiments of the younger generation who lost their lives during the Genji movement in September.

When will elections be held in Nepal ?
