New Delhi: Harini Amarasuriya, who completed her graduation from Delhi University, was sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Sri Lanka on Tuesday. She is the first woman to become Prime Minister after the death of S. Bandaranaike and the third woman leader to reach this position.

Harini got many ministries

President Dissanayake has appointed four people including 54-year-old Harini in the cabinet. She has been given the charge of Minister of Justice, Education, Labor, Industry, Science and Technology, Health and Investment. Dinesh Gunawardene resigned from the post of Prime Minister after the presidential election results were announced.

After completing her graduation in Social Sciences from Hindu College, University of Delhi, Harini Amarasuriya did her postgraduate studies in Applied Anthropology from Australia and then did her PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Edinburgh. She has been a lecturer at the University of Sri Lanka.

Elections will be held at the end of November

On the other hand, NPP MPs Vijitha Herat and Lakshman Nipunarachchi have taken oath as cabinet ministers. After the dissolution of the Parliament, this arrangement will work as a caretaker cabinet and after that elections will be announced. Officials said that elections may be held in the country at the end of November.

President will order reinvestigation of Easter Sunday attack

Sri Lanka's new President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Tuesday said he will reopen the investigation into the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attack.

Terrorists of local jihadist group National Thowheed Jamaat (NTJ) had carried out a series of bomb blasts in which 270 people, including 11 Indians, were killed.

Dissanayake on Tuesday assured to bring out the truth behind the Easter Sunday attacks in a courtesy visit to Catholic Church head Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith.
