The fame of Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is spread all over the world. Especially the Bhasma Aarti held here, to witness which devotees reach Ujjain from far and wide.

Mythological story related to Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga

The story related to Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is found in Shiva Purana. According to the story, King Chandrasen of Ujjain, which was called Avantika at that time, was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. Like the king, his subjects were also engrossed in the worship of Lord Shiva. Once, a demon named Dushan had spread terror in the city of Ujjain. Troubled by this, the king invoked Mahadev.

Pleased with the devotion of the king, Lord Shiva appeared in the form of Mahakaal by tearing the earth and killed Dushan. Then the king and his subjects requested Lord Shiva to reside in their city. Then Lord Shiva accepted their request and took the form of a Jyotirlinga and settled in Ujjain.

Specialty of the temple

Out of all the Jyotirlingas, only Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is the one that is south facing. That is, its face is towards the south, which is unique in itself. Mahakaleshwar temple is mainly divided into three parts, out of which Nag Chandreshwar temple is in the topmost part. Omkareshwar temple is in the middle part and Mahakal Jyotirlinga is seen at the bottom.

The special thing about the Nagchandreshwar temple on the third floor of the temple is that the Nagchandreshwar deity can be seen only on the day of Nagpanchami. On the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri, a huge fair is organized near the temple and worship is performed with rituals at night.
