News Topical, Digital Desk : Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah made a major announcement today, Friday, March 6, to reduce the negative impact of mobile phone use in the state. The Chief Minister has called for a ban on social media access for children under the age of 16.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah presented a budget of ₹4.48 lakh crore for the financial year 2026-27. This budget announced reforms combining technology-driven learning initiatives with regulatory measures to protect children online.
Social media banned for 16-year-olds
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced a ban on social media for children under 16. When this rule is implemented, Karnataka will become the first state in the country to ban social media for children.
Siddaramaiah said, 'To prevent the ill effects of increasing mobile usage on children, the use of social media will be banned for children below 16 years of age.
AI-Best Learning System in Karnataka
CM Siddaramaiah proposed an artificial intelligence-based learning system for students. The CM said the state government will launch a personalized digital tutoring system, developed in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dharwad, to support students in classes 8 to 12.
The programme is expected to benefit approximately 1.22 million students and will be implemented at an estimated cost of Rs 5 crore.
The University of Visvesvaraya College of Engineering in Bengaluru will be given Rs 500 crore for development like IITs, out of which it has been decided to give Rs 100 crore this year.
Siddaramaiah said the state has approved the recruitment of 2,000 teaching staff for degree colleges, polytechnics and engineering colleges.
