News Topical, Digital Desk : We often assume that if we avoid junk food and eat simple home-cooked meals, we're completely safe and healthy. But have you ever found yourself feeling tired, experiencing hair loss, or feeling weak despite eating home-cooked meals?

The truth is that home-cooked food and nutritious food can be two different things. It's not necessarily true that what you eat at home provides the full nutrition your body needs. Let's explore the reasons why you might not be getting the nutrition you need despite eating home-cooked food.

Wrong way of cooking

  • Overcooking – In Indian kitchens, we often overcook or fry food to the point that its vitamins (like Vitamin C and B-complex) get destroyed.
  • Over-frying – In the attempt to make vegetables crispy, we burn their micro-nutrients.
  • Washing vegetables after cutting them – Many people wash vegetables after cutting them, due to which the soluble vitamins get washed away in the water.

Monotonous Diet

Often, households prepare the same meals (such as lentils and rice or roti and vegetables) every day. Our bodies require different phytochemicals and minerals. If your plate doesn't include colorful vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and pulses, you could be suffering from nutritional deficiencies .

Wrong combination and timing

  • To stay healthy, proper timing and consistency of eating is very important.
  • Drinking tea or coffee immediately after a meal prevents the absorption of iron and calcium.
  • Eating food under too much stress does not cause the digestive system to function properly, due to which the body does not get the nutrients.

What to do to increase nutrition?

  • Proper cooking – Where possible, steam vegetables or cook them covered over low heat.
  • Use of iron pan – Use iron pan for cooking vegetables, it naturally increases the amount of iron .
  • Include raw salad – Make sure to have at least one portion of salad with every meal to get enzymes and fiber.
  • Soaking pulses – Soaking pulses and grains for 2-3 hours before cooking removes the anti-nutrients present in them and improves digestion.
