News Topical, Digital Desk : Vitthal Rukmini Temple located in Maharashtra is dedicated to a form of Lord Shri Krishna. In the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, Lord Vitthal is standing on a brick with both his hands on his waist. In this posture, he is waiting for his Bhakti Pundalik.
If we talk about the history of this temple, it is said that the temple was established in the 11th century. However, the main temple was built in the 12th century by the Yadava rulers of Devagiri. In Maharashtra, Lord Shri Krishna is also called by the name Vitthal. That is why this temple is also known as Vitthal Temple. Due to the location of this temple in Pandharpur, the Lord is also known as Pandharinath. In this temple, there is an idol of Mother Rukmani along with Lord Vitthal.
Where is this temple built
Vitthal temple is situated in Pandharpur situated on the banks of Bhima river in Sholapur city of Maharashtra. For the last 800 years, the pilgrimage to Pandharpur is being held here every year. Lakhs of devotees participate in this pilgrimage and travel about 250 kms on foot. There is a holy river named Chandrabhaga near this temple. It is said that all the sins of the devotees are destroyed by taking bath in this river.
Why did God stand waiting for his devotee?
This temple is also a witness to the fact that it is not only the devotees who wait for God. If there is power in devotion, then God not only obeys the devotee but also waits for him. This story is from the 6th century. When the mother-father devotee Pundalik used to worship his idol Shri Krishna. At that time, pleased with Pundalik's devotion, Lord Krishna appeared before Pundalik along with Rukmini. He told Pundalik that he had come to accept his hospitality. But, at that time Pundalik's father was sleeping and he was massaging his father's feet.
In this way this place became a pilgrimage
Pundalik asked the Lord to stand on the brick and wait for him. Saying this, he again started massaging his father's feet. The Lord stood on the brick for a long time with both hands on his waist. When the father woke up, Pundalik came out of the room. But by then a stone idol had formed on the brick. Pundalik started worshipping Vitthal form in his house. Over time, this place became famous as Pandharpur and became the biggest pilgrimage site of Maharashtra. Later, Pandharpur Wari i.e. pilgrimage on foot started here.
