News Topical, Digital Desk : An Indian-origin doctor in the US has been charged with serious medical fraud, illegal distribution of opioids and having sex with patients in exchange for prescribing medicines. 51-year-old Ritesh Kalra has been placed under house arrest following a US court hearing.

According to the US Attorney's Office, Kalra ran a pill mill at his clinic, where he allegedly prescribed powerful opioid medications such as oxycodone without any medical justification. Prosecutors claim Kalra used his medical license not for treatment, but to prey on vulnerable patients struggling with addiction.

More than 31 thousand prescriptions issued

It is alleged that between January 2019 and February 2025, Kalra issued more than 31,000 prescriptions for oxycodone, with some days writing more than 50 prescriptions.

What are the allegations against the doctor?

Kalra is accused of allegedly billing for false personal meetings and counseling sessions. Kalra will not be able to practice while the case is pending. His lawyer Michael Baldassar has denied the allegations, the New York Daily News reported.
