News Topical, Digital Desk : A statement by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami chief Dr. Shafiqur Rahman on relations with India has gone viral on social media.

In fact, a journalist asked what kind of relationship Bangladesh would have with India if Jamaat came to power. In response, the Jamaat chief pointed to the green, flashing lights and said, "Can you see how colorful it is when it comes to relations with India?" He laughed and walked away.

What is the meaning of this comment?

Although the comment is cryptic, it is believed to reflect a realisation within the Jamaat that its pro-Pakistan and anti-India stance has not served Bangladesh's interests.

Relations with India have deteriorated since the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh. Rahman's comments are perhaps the first indication that Jamaat is willing to build better relations with India.

However, the Jamaat has often targeted India for allowing Hasina to stay there and many Jamaat sympathisers have often called for targeting India's North-East.

But in recent days, the Jamaat's top leadership has toned down its rhetoric. Shafiqur Rehman previously claimed that an Indian diplomat met with him in December 2025.

Emphasis on improving relations in election manifesto

In its manifesto for the upcoming elections, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has called for peaceful and cooperative relations with neighbouring countries, including India, Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Thailand, based on mutual respect and fairness.

Jamaat is pro-Pakistan

The Jamaat-e-Islami (JeM) is a pro-Pakistan, radical Islamic organization. In the past, the party has been known for its anti-India stance, and several of its leaders or affiliates have made anti-India statements. However, the Jamaat-e-Islami (JeM) has recently attempted to improve its image by increasing its affinity with Hindus.

It also fielded a Hindu candidate in a Hindu-majority constituency. India has repeatedly raised the issue of atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh.
