News Topical, Digital Desk : One of the most shrewd and controversial characters in the Mahabharata, Shakuni is known for his diplomacy and the "magic dice" that laid the foundation for the Battle of Kurukshetra. But have you ever wondered what happened to those dice after Shakuni's death?

According to the original Sanskrit Mahabharata, composed by the sage Ved Vyasa, Shakuni's dice were no ordinary ivory dice. According to legend, these dice were made from the bones of Shakuni's father, King Subala. As he lay dying, Subala told Shakuni that the bones would always obey his commands. These dice contained the energy of the humiliation and suffering of Shakuni's entire family. This was why the dice showed the same number whenever Shakuni desired.

The story of Shakuni's magic dice from its origin to its end

1. The Making of the Dice and the Oath of Revenge (Folk Tale)

According to popular folk tales from the Mahabharata, Shakuni's dice were not made of ivory, but of the spinal bones of his father, King Subala.

When Dhritarashtra imprisoned and starved Shakuni and his entire family, Shakuni's father, before dying, ordered dice to be made from his bones. He said, "My anger and vengeance reside in these dice; they will always obey you." This was why, in the game of chess, the dice always showed the numbers Shakuni desired.

2. Mahabharata War and the killing of Shakuni

In the Mahabharata War, Shakuni participated in both diplomacy and warfare on the Kaurava side. On the 18th and final day of the war, the Pandavas Nakula and Sahadeva defeated Shakuni's army. Finally, Sahadeva, fulfilling his vow, killed Shakuni.

3. End of the Dice: Shri Krishna's Decision (Mystery)

After Shakuni's death , the biggest question was what would happen to those elusive dice? According to the story:

After killing Shakuni, the Pandavas went to his camp to find the magical dice so that they could be destroyed and they would not be misused again.

However, Lord Krishna arrived before the Pandavas could reach there. He knew that these dice contained the seeds of destruction for the Kali Yuga.

4. Immersion in water and the advent of Kali Yuga

  • It is said that Lord Krishna crushed the dice into ash (powder) with his hands. When Arjuna arrived, Krishna gave him the ashes and ordered him to throw them into a deep body of water or the ocean.
  • Arjuna threw that ash into the water.
  • Shakuni had given the dice a spell that could revive them with the touch of water. As soon as the ashes were mixed with water, the negative energy came back into existence.
  • It is believed that this energy returned with the advent of Kaliyuga in the form of gambling and unrighteousness, which are still seen as symbols of greed and deceit.
