Lord Shiva is considered to be the first Guru of the world. Although Guru should be respected every day, but there is one day in the year which is dedicated to the Gurus and that is Guru Purnima.

The full moon of the month of Ashadh is called Guru Purnima. Guru Ved Vyas ji was born on this day. This year Guru Purnima is on 10 July 2025. Many people have a question in their mind that whom should they make their Guru from whom they can receive initiation, let's clear your doubts here -

Why is it necessary to have a Guru?

The word 'Guru' comes from the Sanskrit language, which means - "one who leads from darkness to light". The glory of Guru has been described in detail in Vedas, Puranas and other religious texts, life without Guru is directionless, hence saints-great men and Puranas say that every person must have a Guru in life, who can guide you.

Lord Krishna tells Arjun that just as it is worthy for all the four castes to worship me, similarly it is worthy to worship the Guru. Just as Ganga is the best among the rivers, similarly, serving the Guru is the best among the auspicious deeds.

Whom should I make my Guru?

  • According to the Vedas, those people are very fortunate who have received initiation from a Sadguru. One does not become a Guru by calling someone a Guru, it is also necessary to fulfill the duties towards the Guru.
  • Guru means the giver of knowledge, so make your Guru the person who can give you knowledge and guidance, can tell you the difference between right and wrong. Every person desires happiness in this world and salvation after death. According to the scriptures, this is possible only when a person does good deeds.
  • Guru works to show us the right path at every step, so make only that person your Guru who can help you in improving your life.
  • In today's time, Gurus are not limited to only religious or spiritual gurus, but they are present in every field as teachers, guides, and inspirational persons.

Why is it necessary to take initiation from a Guru?

According to the Puranas, those who become religious gurus in Sanatan Dharma, it is necessary for them to take initiation because without it all the religious works done by you are fruitless. You do not get the virtuous benefits of many such works like Kanya Daan, Shivalaya construction, temple construction, Katha Poojan, fasting, donation, pond construction, well construction.
