Frederick received 325 votes in the second round of voting. He needed a majority of 316 out of 630 in the secret ballot, but received only 310 votes in the first round of voting, which was less than the 328 seats his coalition had.

After winning the second round of voting in Parliament, 69-year-old Friedrich reached the Presidential Palace. President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will formally appoint him Chancellor. After this he will take charge and lead the new government formed by the Union Block (CDU / CSU) and the Social Democratic Party.
