News Topical, Digital Desk : The Indian government has completely banned e-cigarettes, but today this issue was raised in the Parliament, when BJP leader Anurag Thakur accused a Trinamool Congress MP of smoking e-cigarettes in the House and there was a huge uproar on this issue. Now e-cigarettes have come into discussion again. Let us tell you that years ago, the Indian government's Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had completely banned e-cigarettes. Sitharaman said that its manufacturing, distribution and sale have been completely banned. She also told about the provisions of punishment for its use. 

India has banned e-cigarettes

On May 20, 2019, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) issued a white paper on e-cigarettes to the central government. This paper called for a complete ban on e-cigarettes. It listed the side effects of e-cigarettes and stated that the younger generation believes there's nothing wrong with smoking e-cigarettes. However, e-cigarettes are just as harmful to health as regular cigarettes.

What is an e-cigarette and how dangerous is it?

  •  E-cigarettes are a type of electronic inhaler filled with a liquid containing nicotine and other chemicals.
  • This inhaler converts this liquid into vapor using battery energy, which gives the user the feeling of smoking a cigarette.
     
  •  The liquid used in e-cigarettes often contains nicotine, and sometimes even more dangerous chemicals. Therefore, e-cigarettes cannot be considered completely safe from a health perspective.
     
  • E-cigarettes have generally been considered an alternative to smoking.
     
  • Research has revealed that its consumption can cause many other diseases including asthma.
     
  • The chemicals used in it are lethal, due to its side effects the risk of popcorn lungs and lung cancer is increasing rapidly.
     
  • Many countries around the world have expressed concern over the increasing death toll due to the ill effects of e-cigarettes on health.
     
  • In some countries it is completely banned, while in some there is a partial ban on it.
     
  • There are some countries where its sale is legal, but it is banned in India.

What is the punishment for smoking e-cigarettes?

  • For first-time violators of the orders, a maximum imprisonment of up to one year along with a fine of Rs 1 lakh or both has been provided.
     
  • The second offense carries a fine of up to ₹5 lakh, three years in prison, or both. This includes e-hookahs.
