News Topical, Digital Desk : When faced with a health problem, some people, instead of consulting a doctor, buy medicines directly from a chemist and start taking them on their own. There are others who abandon their antibiotic course midway. This carelessness can be dangerous for our health. Similarly, we frequently see numerous examples of antibiotic misuse by quacks or untrained practitioners.

As bacteria become more prevalent and treatments become more challenging, it is becoming a growing public health problem. This is why the World Health Organization has adopted this year's theme for AMR: Be proactive, protect the present, and secure the future.

Symptoms of AMR

Affected individuals are susceptible to repeated infections. Those who self-medicate or receive medications from local, untrained doctors are also at risk. Advanced testing for AMR is used to assess its effectiveness. Generally, measuring AMR levels is not easy.

Change these five daily habits

  • Self-administration of antibiotics – Take them only under medical supervision. Misuse can lead to the development of antimicrobial resistance.
  • Risks from the poultry industry: Antibiotics given to chickens can lead to AMR in humans.
  • Infections and health problems: Those with diabetes or other health conditions should consult a doctor and receive the typhoid and hepatitis vaccines. Those with frequent infections or weakened immunity should be aware of the risk of AMR.
  • Contaminated drinking water – Use RO or boiled water. Carry water with you when leaving home. Contaminated drinking water also poses a high risk of AMR.
  • Unsanitary food: Eat only clean, home-cooked food. Unsanitary food can cause typhoid or stomach problems.

Learn preventive measures

  • Special attention should be paid to hand hygiene.
  • In India, its infection is mostly due to water, hence keep the water clean.
  • It spreads from one patient to another, so be alert.
  • You can take paracetamol or Crocin for fever, but you should not take antibiotics on your own.
  • If you have any problem, you should consult a doctor.
  • If infected, wear a mask and avoid contact with people.
