News Topical, Digital Desk : The trend of body detox has been gaining traction on social media for some time now. Every week, a new magical detox drink emerges. Sometimes a beetroot shot, sometimes a bitter gourd and carrot blend. It's claimed that these juices will cleanse your liver and remove toxins from your body, but is this true?

Do you need detox drinks?

You do not need any external juice because your body parts are doing this work 24 hours a day.

  • Liver – It breaks down drugs, alcohol, hormones, and metabolic waste into a form the body can excrete.
  • Kidneys – Our kidneys filter approximately 150-180 liters of blood daily. They constantly remove toxins like urea, creatinine, and excess salt.

If these organs are functioning properly, you do not need detox juice and if they are not functioning properly, no juice can fix them.

Can detox juices cause harm?

  • Kidney disease – Beets, tomatoes, and gourds are high in potassium. High potassium levels can cause dangerously irregular heartbeats.
  • Stones – Beetroot and spinach juice contain high amounts of oxalate, which can further aggravate the problem of stones .
  • Diabetes – Juicing removes the fiber from fruits and vegetables, which causes blood sugar to rise rapidly .
  • Liver disease – There is no evidence that vegetable juice can cure fatty liver or fibrosis.
  • Hyponatremia – Being on a liquid-only diet can cause low sodium levels in the body.
