News Topical, Digital Desk : The Delhi government is pursuing an aggressive strategy to completely green public transport to address the capital's deteriorating air quality and increasing traffic congestion. In response, the Transport Department has requested 3,330 additional electric buses from the central government , significantly increasing the number of e - buses on the city 's roads .
To make Delhi's transportation network more environmentally friendly, the government has proposed the purchase of 3,330 new e-buses with immediate effect. Significantly, this fleet will include seven-meter-long buses, which can be operated in narrow streets and interior areas. This will bring public transport to areas where bus service has been limited.
Quota increased in coordination with the Center
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that clean air and affordable, accessible transportation are among the government's top priorities. She added that after a high-level meeting with the central government agency Convergence Energy Services Limited, an agreement was reached to increase the quota of additional buses for Delhi in the second phase of the PM e- Drive scheme.
If there is a hindrance in the subsidy , the Delhi government will bear the expenses.
According to the Chief Minister, the Delhi government has requested the Ministry of Heavy Industries and the central government to include the demand for 3,330 buses under the subsidy model , in addition to the 2,800 buses already approved. If the subsidy is not available for any technical reason , the Delhi government is prepared to bear the cost of the project itself.
Dependence on private vehicles will decrease
The introduction of these new e-buses will not only strengthen public transportation but also provide a solid foundation for the green transition . The Chief Minister said that with the increased number of e-buses, people will prioritize public transport over private vehicles. This will have a direct impact on pollution levels and significantly reduce toxic fumes .
More than 5000 e-buses on the roads by March
The government aims to have more than 5,000 electric buses in operation in Delhi by March. This number is expected to increase to 7,000 by the end of the year . This will make Delhi one of the few metropolitan cities in the country with the largest fleet of electric buses .
There will be a big increase in the total number of buses
With the addition of 2,800 buses in the first phase of the PM e- Drive scheme , the total number of buses in Delhi will reach 10,430 . With the addition of 3,330 buses in the second phase , this figure will increase to approximately 13,760. This expansion will take the capital's transportation capacity to a new level.
Current fleet status
Currently, 5,336 government buses operate in Delhi. Additionally, 1,162 9-meter-long Devi buses are also serving passengers. In the future, the increased number of e-buses will reduce dependence on conventional buses.
Buses are planned to suit every need.
All 3,330 buses requested by the Transport Department will be low- floor . Of these, 500 will be seven-meter buses, used on narrow roads and last- mile connectivity . 2,330 will be nine-meter buses, operating on feeder routes and smaller roads. Another 500 will be twelve-meter buses, deployed on main roads and heavily congested corridors .
