News Topical, Digital Desk : 40 percent of the women of the country feel unsafe in their own city. This is revealed by a recent report on women's safety. According to a survey conducted in 31 cities of all states, Ranchi, Srinagar, Kolkata, Delhi, Faridabad, Patna and Jaipur were found to be the most unsafe cities for women, while the safest cities are Kohima, Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneshwar, Aizawl, Gangtok, Itanagar and Mumbai.

These figures have been given in the latest report on women's safety by Pvalue Analytics, NARI (National Annual Report and Index on Women's Safety). On Thursday, National Commission for Women Chairperson Vijaya Kishor Rahatkar released this report in Delhi. One big city of every state has been included in the survey while two cities of Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow and Agra have been included.

40% do not feel safe

The survey sought the opinion of 12770 women above the age of 18. Looking at women's safety from the perspective of women across the country shows that on an average 64.6 percent women feel safe in their city, which means the remaining 40 percent do not feel safe.

The parameters on which women's safety is assessed include overall safety, as well as neighbourhood, transport, education, workplace, health, entertainment places and online harassment. It also includes incidents of harassment and complaints about them, apart from infrastructure.

7 percent of women faced harassment

  • The report also highlights harassment in public places. It found that seven percent of women faced harassment in 2024, with women aged 18 to 24 being at the highest risk. This seven percent figure is much higher than the NCRB figure of 0.07 percent in 2022. However, NCRB figures are based on FIRs, while these reports are based on incidents reported by women. In which unreported cases also come to the fore.
  • Out of the seven percent, only 33 percent reported and action was taken in only 16 percent of the cases. According to the report, women have more security concerns at night due to public infrastructure including lighting, patrolling as well as social aspects. If we look at the trust in the government system regarding security, only 25 percent have expressed confidence in effective action, which means that only one woman out of four has faith in appropriate action.

Women in Mumbai feel safe

Regarding the feeling of insecurity in Delhi, Pvalue Analytics' Project Director Sumit Arora says that women in the capital have high expectations regarding safety. He says that women should be safe to move around in the capital day and night. At the same time, the sudden increase in crimes against women in Kolkata last year has also adversely affected the safety.

While women in Mumbai feel relatively safer. Releasing the report, Rahatkar said that this is a big step towards understanding the safety concerns of women. Our priority is to ensure that every woman feels safe at home, workplace, public places and online.
