The Markandeya Purana explains in detail that Brahma created nature, after which Goddess Nature divided herself into six forms. This sixth part came to be known as Chhathi Maiya, and this is considered very important. Chhathi Maiya is also known as Manas Putri. In Hinduism, it is customary to worship Chhathi Maiya on the sixth day after the birth of a child, which bestows the child with the blessing of long life.

How did Chhath Puja begin?

According to mythology, there was a king named Priyamvad, and his wife, Malini, was deeply saddened by their childlessness. Troubled by this problem, he one day approached the sage Kashyapa. The sage advised him to perform a yajna (fire sacrifice) to conceive a child. He performed the yajna. Consequently, he was blessed with a son. The child was born dead. The king then decided to give up his life. At that moment, the girl Devasena appeared and told King Priyamvad to worship her. "I am born from the sixth element of the original nature," he said. "For this reason, I will be called Shashthi." The king then worshipped the girl Devasena, and she was blessed with a son. It is believed that Chhath Puja originated from this time.
