New Delhi: In the summer season, when the sun is shining brightly, many times when we look at the road, it seems that there is water at some distance. Something similar happens in the desert as well, but it is not actually water, rather it is our illusion. The illusion of seeing water like this on the road or in the desert is called a mirage. Here we are telling you what is the reason for seeing a mirage and why does it happen.

What is a mirage?

Mirage is formed when light passes through layers of air of different temperatures. During this, the rays of light are bent through the air and reflected. Overall, in simple words, it is formed due to the temperature of the ground and the temperature zone above it. Due to which we see water on the road i.e. mirage during the summer season.

Where is the mirage visible?

Mirages are often seen in deserts, roads and fields. Apart from this, sometimes you may get the illusion of it in plains also. In Italy, a mirage named Fata Morgana is very famous.

Why was it named Mirage?

This word has come from Rajasthan. There are a lot of deserts there, so when a deer feels thirsty in the heat of the desert, then the sunlight appears to the deer as shining sand like water. When it goes near it, it does not find water and keeps walking like this. At the same time, deer is called Mrig in Sanskrit and illusion is called Mirage. This is how it got the name Mirage.
