News Topical, Digital Desk : More than 50 years after the murder of former Railway Minister Lalit Narayan Mishra, the case has resurfaced. Senior BJP leader and former MP Ashwini Kumar Choubey has approached the Delhi High Court, demanding a court-monitored reinvestigation of the case.

In a petition filed in the Delhi High Court, Ashwani Choubey argues that those convicted in Lalit Narayan Mishra's murder are wrong and that the CBI did not conduct a fair investigation. He alleges that the murder was part of a larger political conspiracy to eliminate a popular leader who could have posed a challenge to the then-government.

How was Lalit Narayan Mishra murdered?

Lalit Narayan Mishra was assassinated in a grenade blast on January 2, 1975, while inaugurating a railway project in Samastipur, Bihar. The CBI charged four members of the social-spiritual organization Anand Marg: Santoshanand, Sudevanand, Gopalji, and Ranjan Dwivedi. A Delhi court convicted them in 2014.

Ashwini Choubey has now filed an intervention petition on the appeals of these convicts. He said that Lalit Narayan Mishra was about to join the Jayaprakash Narayan movement at that time, which could have dealt a major blow to the Indira Gandhi government.

High Court raised questions, issued warning

A bench of Justices Vivek Chaudhary and Manoj Jain of the Delhi High Court heard the case. The court questioned Choubey about his delay in taking up the matter. The court warned that if the case was not based on solid grounds, he would face a heavy fine. The case will now be heard again on November 11th.

Questions raised on the investigation report

BJP leader Ashwani Choubey, in his petition, cited the 1978 Bihar CID report and the investigation report by V.M. Tarkunde and claimed that the CBI deliberately diverted the investigation to protect the real culprits.
