News Topical, Digital Desk : To meet the large-scale power requirements for artificial intelligence projects, tech companies are now taking help of nuclear power. Meta Platforms has signed a 20-year agreement with Constellation Energy in which the tech company will buy electricity from nuclear power plants. Constellation Energy operates the Clinton Clean Energy Center. Amid the high demand for electricity for AI projects and responsibility towards the environment, companies are increasing emphasis on nuclear plants for green energy.
According to Constellation CEO Joe Dominguez, this agreement will help in license renewal, modernization and maintenance of the plant. He indicated that this deal is worth billions of dollars. He said that billions of dollars of capital are required to run a nuclear plant for the next 20 years. This is the first agreement of its kind in the US in which a long-term power purchase agreement has been made with an operational nuclear plant. Earlier, Microsoft and Constellation had also signed an agreement for the Three Mile Island plant in Pennsylvania. Under this deal, an agreement has been reached to restart a working reactor in the plant. This reactor is in line to be shut down. Under this agreement of Meta, the company will take electricity from it. Meta will not build any data center at the plant site. This agreement will help Constellation to renew the license of the Clinton plant in 2027. Also, after the proposed upgrade, 30 megawatts of additional power generation will be possible from the plant. Due to the increasing demand for AI, tech companies are building data centers on a large scale. The power demand of these data centers is usually met by natural gas-powered plants. However, keeping in mind the impact on the environment, Meta and other companies are giving priority to clean energy sources, which includes nuclear energy.
