News Topical, Digital Desk : By the grace of Goddess Annapurna, devotees' granaries are always full. This year, Annapurna Jayanti is celebrated on December 4th. To reap the full benefits of Annapurna Jayanti, one must recite the story of Annapurna Mata during the Annapurna Jayanti puja. So, let's read the story of the incarnation of Goddess Annapurna (Annapurna Mata Katha).

What is mythology

According to legend, Lord Shiva once told Goddess Parvati that everything in the world is an illusion. He also said that food is also an illusion, and that the body and food have no special significance. Goddess Parvati felt this insult to food and was deeply disappointed. She decided to eliminate food from the world.

This caused a food shortage across the earth. People, driven by hunger, began to cry out in distress. Then Mother Parvati assumed the form of Goddess Annapurna , holding the Akshaya Patra, the vessel that never runs out of food.

Lord Shiva took  the form of a monk

Then Lord Shiva disguised himself as a monk and approached Goddess Annapurna to beg for food. Lord Shiva also recognized that the body and food are crucial to existence. Goddess Annapurna donated food to everyone, which Lord Shiva distributed among the Earth's inhabitants. This alleviated the Earth's famine.

Since then, Mother Annapurna has been revered as the goddess of food. It is believed that the day when Goddess Parvati assumed the form of Goddess Annapurna was the full moon day of the month of Margashirsha, and hence, this day is celebrated as Annapurna Jayanti.
