News Topical, Digital Desk : Stroke (Stroke Signs) is a serious problem, which can prove fatal in severe cases. Stroke cases have been rising rapidly in the country for some time now, especially among young people, and this is a matter of concern. Therefore, it is extremely important to raise public awareness about it. For this purpose, World Stroke Day (World Stroke Day 2025) is celebrated every year on October 29th.
In such a situation, it is important to take precautions and identify its causes to prevent it in time. There are many causes of stroke, one of which is air pollution. To learn more about how poor air quality can cause stroke, we spoke with Dr. Praveen Gupta, Director of Neuro and Spine (MAIINS) at Maringo Asia Hospitals, Gurugram. Let's explore the connection between stroke and air pollution.
The connection between air pollution and stroke
Doctors say that air pollution is a very important cause of stroke . According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution increases the risk of stroke by 25%. This is because the particles produced in air pollution cause inflammation in our arteries. Due to this inflammation, the functioning of our artery walls deteriorates, which increases the risk of blood clots. Today, air pollution has caused an increase of more than 50% in stroke cases.
How to deal with air pollution
To reduce the negative effects of air pollution , wear a mask when going outside. Use an air purifier at home. Avoid outdoor activities during periods of severe air pollution. Quit smoking. Control lifestyle risk factors such as smoking, blood pressure, cholesterol, and sugar. Exercise indoors and stay hydrated when the air quality is particularly poor.
Recognition of urgent stroke in time
A stroke can be very dangerous. Therefore, early detection and treatment are crucial to prevent it. We spoke with Dr. Arun Saroha, Principal Director and Unit Head of Neurosurgery at Max Hospital, Gurugram, to learn how to identify a stroke early.
The doctor explained that a stroke is a medical emergency in which every second counts. It occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is interrupted due to a blockage or rupture of a blood vessel. Without oxygen and nutrients, brain cells rapidly die, leading to long-term disability or death. This is why time is crucial in preventing it.
The first and most important step is to immediately recognize the symptoms of a stroke. The doctor recommends using the FAST technique to quickly identify the symptoms. Let's learn about this technique.
- F - Face Drooping: Ask the person to smile. Is one side of the face drooping or numb? Is the smile uneven? If so, don't ignore it.
- A - Arm Weakness: Ask the person to raise both arms. Is one arm drooping? Is one arm weak or numb? If so, this is a red flag.
- S - Speech Difficulty: Is the person's speech slurred or difficult to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. If they have difficulty speaking, it could be a sign of a stroke.
- T – Time to call emergency services: If you experience any of these symptoms, even if they appear and disappear, seek medical help immediately.
Also keep this in mind
Doctors advise against waiting for symptoms to subside and never driving yourself or the patient to the hospital. In such situations, going by ambulance ensures that health professionals can begin life-saving care en route, increasing the chance of a positive outcome. Your prompt action could save a life and reduce the life-threatening effects of a stroke.
