News Topical, Digital Desk : The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh is working to revitalize a special heritage site associated with Paramahansa Yogananda, the yoga guru who taught Kriya Yoga to the entire world. Following the Chief Minister's wishes and guidance, Paramahansa Yogananda's birthplace in Gorakhpur is being renovated into a grand memorial.

Yoga Guru Paramahansa Yogananda was born on January 5, 1893, in a rented house in the Muftipur neighborhood of Gorakhpur (near the Kotwali police station). His father, Bhagwati Lal, was a railway employee. After his birth, Yogananda spent eight years living there with his family.

Grand memorial of Paramahansa Yogananda

While living in Gorakhpur, Yogananda became deeply influenced by India's universal heritage of yoga as a child. It is said that as a child, Yogananda would enter the Gorakhnath Temple and fall into deep meditation. Over time, he gained a reputation as a master of Kriya Yoga and a spiritual guru, both nationally and internationally.

Paramahansa Yogananda has a large number of disciples and followers abroad. Since it was Yogananda's birthplace, he frequently visited Gorakhpur, leading to numerous calls to develop the place as a spiritual center. Taking this seriously, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has decided to develop Yogananda's birthplace into a tourist destination.

CM Yogi gave instructions to the Tourism Department

Under the Chief Minister's guidance, the Tourism Department has prepared a plan to construct a Yoga Bhavan at the birthplace of Yogananda at a cost of approximately 28 crore rupees, the foundation stone of which was laid by CM Yogi himself in May 2025. Rajendra Prasad Yadav, Deputy Director of the Tourism Department, states that the memorial's construction is currently progressing rapidly. So far, 22 percent of the work has been completed. The target is to complete the work by July 1, 2027.

Yogananda's memories will be preserved on every floor.

Each floor of the four-story memorial building near the Kotwali police station will feature a unique display of Yogananda's memories. According to the plan, a lawn will be developed outside the ground floor at the birthplace, where a grand statue of Yogananda will be installed. A museum and library will be built on the first floor, displaying photographs of Yogananda in various poses.

Precious items associated with Yogananda will also be displayed. The second floor will be the most spiritually significant. It will house a temple-like setting for the site where Yogananda was born. Opposite the temple will be the center's second yoga center, where members of Yogananda's disciple lineage will be able to practice yoga and meditate.

Two halls will be built on the third and final floor, providing facilities for yoga practice. A separate space will be designated for meditation. The tourism development at the birthplace of yoga guru Paramahansa Yogananda is expected to increase the number of foreign tourists by nearly 10-fold.
